MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man fatally shot his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself early Thursday morning in southwest Miami-Dade County, police said.
Miami-Dade police were called to a shooting at the Sunrise at Sunset apartment complex at Southwest 152nd Avenue and Southwest 75th Street.
Police said Alina Carrera, 47,was killed by her husband, from whom she recently separated.
"There was a dispute at the parking lot, and that's when he was able to produce his firearm and obviously shoot her," Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.
Police said Manuel Rodriguez, 56, waited for Carrera in the parking lot and shot her multiple times after she had gotten out of her car.
Carrera was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rodriguez then tried to kill himself, police said. He underwent surgery at Kendall Regional Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.
Police said the couple's two sons, the youngest 16 years old, were inside the home at the time, but they were asleep and didn't witness the incident.
"It's a sad situation because of the fact that you have two boys that are left behind with mom, and for them to find out like this, it's tragic," Zabaleta said. "It's heartbreaking."
