Cab passengers shot in Miami Beach

Search underway for gunmen in red BMW convertible

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach police are investigating after two men were shot while riding in a cab early Monday morning.

The shooting was reported just after 3 a.m. in the area of Pine Tree Drive and West 40th Street, according to Ernesto Rodriguez of Miami Beach police. The cab driver told investigators four men in a red BMW convertible shot at his car several times and took off.

"He just looked at the two guys in the back of my car and he started firing," taxi driver Ronald Exhantus said. "I tried to take off, because once he fired I tried to protect myself, I tried to protect them too, but I kept driving (and) he kept shooting."

One of the passengers was shot in the head and the other was grazed by a bullet. Both are listed in stable condition and are expected to be OK. The cab driver was not injured.

"I see how the place is roped off," Tzvi Bogomilsky, who lives nearby, said. "Very concerning. Why would a car go and shoot up another one on Miami Beach?"

It is unclear whether the victims knew the gunmen, but detectives said they believe the men were targeted because the shooters never aimed at the taxi driver.

Exhantus also told Local 10 News that he believes the victims knew the gunmen because one of them saw the BMW pull up and said, "Oh damn, it's him."

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami Beach police or Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
