MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach police are searching for a man they believe was behind the wheel of a car involved in a fatal hit-and-run early Tuesday morning.

The man was driving a silver BMW when it sped past a police officer on Collins Avenue near 15th Street about 2:30 a.m. When the officer went to investigate, he found another man dead in the street near Collins Avenue at 11th Street.

"He was traveling southbound from about 15th Street at a very high rate of speed, which resulted in this tragedy," Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said.

Police have detained three women who they said were in the car with the driver when the man was hit. The BMW, which had severe damage, was also found.

Collins Avenue was blocked from 10th Street to 12th Street as police investigated the fatal crash.
