Cousins hurt in fireworks mishap in Opa-locka in stable condition

Boy, 9, loses majority of his right hand, in critical but stable condition

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – Two cousins who were hurt in a fireworks mishap Friday night are now in stable condition at Ryder Trauma Center.

The boys were playing together or were in the same group in front of the apartment complex where the incident took place on Atlantic Avenue, officials said.

A 9-year-old boy lost a majority of his right hand, Local 10 News has learned. He was listed in critical but stable condition Saturday.

A 15-year-old boy is in stable condition with burns described as not significant.

It's unclear who lit the firework that exploded in the 9-year-old boy's hand, but both boys were lighting fireworks Friday night.

Authorities said they are working to find out who purchased the fireworks and where they were purchased from.
