Victim taken to the hospital with axle bolt in head

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A 70-year-old woman was sent to the hospital Thursday after being impaled by a bicycle in her garage.

Neighbors said they heard her calling for help from her Hollywood home located on Cleveland Street. Mary Yeates said she found her neighbor, Bonnie lying on the ground in the garage.

"She said she fell on a bike, and all I could see, I could see her feet,” Yeates said. “Her hand looked like it was full of blood; she had like a picture over her."

According to Hollywood fire rescue, the woman had fallen on the bicycle with the axle bolt of the wheel lodged in her head

"She said it was her skull,” Yeates said.

Firefighters spent more than an hour using the Jaws of Life to remove the majority of the bicycle.

“With the spokes and the center piece of the axle, and they took her away with that attached into her head,” said neighbor Marcel Chin.

Doctors were able to remove the bolt from her head.

The victim’s husband told Local 10 he was grateful to his neighbor who helped.
