Man accused of stealing praying woman's purse at church arrested

BSO says Jonathan Somps caught after DUI arrest

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man accused of stealing a woman's purse while she was praying at church was caught after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said Jonathan Somps was caught on surveillance video stealing the 84-year-old woman's purse Dec. 20 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church in North Lauderdale, where he was attending his niece's baptism.

Surveillance video showed a man slide the purse off the chair next to the woman and walk outside. The woman noticed her purse was gone just as the man was walking out the door.

A tipster later identified Somps as the man who stole the purse, but detectives were unable to find him.

That changed Friday after Somps was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. He now faces an additional charge of grand theft.

Somps has since been released from jail on bond.
