PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A pair of teenagers was arrested Tuesday after allegedly trying to steal more than $300 worth of stuff from the Target store in Pembroke Pines.

Pembroke Pines police said a security worker at the store said he watched Johnese Fontanez, 18, and Nia Stricklen, 19, place store merchandise in their purses. That security worker said Fontanez and Stricklen walked right past the registers and did not pay for the stuff. He stopped them in the parking lot and held them until police arrived.

When officers arrived, they said both women confessed and that Fontanez stated that they did it "because they were stupid."

Detective said Fontanez and Stricklen stole five clothing items worth $108.95, six electrical equipment items worth $179.94 and one piece of office equipment worth $13.58.

Police said the pair was also caught on store surveillance video, and that tape has been entered as evidence.

Both Fontanez and Stricklen were arrested on theft charges and booked at Broward County's main jail. Both have since bonded out.
