Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said firefighters were able to remove two pet dogs from the fire before locating the fire in the first floor living room area. They were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to the second floor.

The home, which is separated into two units, houses a family of seven -- three adults and four kids -- and a family of four -- three adults and an 11-year-old boy.

Carroll said neither families were in the home at the time of the fire.

It's unclear at the time what may have started the fire.

Both families have been displaced.
