Teen shot in thigh released from hospital

Eddy Penalver, 16, recovering at Little Havana apartment

MIAMI – A teenager who was shot in the thigh early Saturday morning in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood has been released from Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Miami police said the 16-year-old boy, identified Monday as Eddy Penalver, was standing near the intersection of Southwest 10th Avenue and Southwest Fifth Street about 1:30 a.m. when he was shot.

Penalver was treated for his gunshot wound at Jackson Memorial Hospital and released Sunday.

"He's doing good, and he's recovering from his injury," brother Christopher Lorenzana told Local 10 News reporter Layron Livingston.

Penalver's mother and sister spoke to Livingston through their Little Havana apartment door. They said he has to use crutches to get around and is still in a lot of pain.

Penalver's friend shared video of the teen rapping on the same corner hours before the shooting.

"We don't have no idea why this happened or how it happened," Lorenzana said.

Witnesses said the shooter was dressed in black and got away in a black car.

The shooter hasn't been caught. A motive for the shooting is not immediately known.
