U.S. Coast Guard searching for Cuban migrant off Man Key

Cuban migrant last seen swimming towards Key West

KEY WEST, Fla. – The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a Cuban migrant who was reported missing off the Florida Keys.

According to a news release from the Coast Guard, 11 Cuban migrants were seen landing on Man Key. The migrants claimed two other men in their group were last seen swimming towards Key West.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted and rescued one of the migrants, but the Coast Guard is still searching for the other migrant.

Coast Guard officials said more than 2,000 Cubans have attempted to cross the Florida Straits to the U.S. since October.

"The Coast Guard continues to strongly discourage attempts to illegally enter the country by taking to the sea," Capt. Mark Fedor said. "These trips are extremely dangerous and could lead to loss of life."
