Teen dies, another wounded in nearby shootings

17-year-old killed, another teen wounded in 2 shootings

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A teenager was shot and killed Wednesday, and another teen was wounded in a second shooting nearby, Miami-Dade police said.

Police said the teen was shot at 1425 NW 71st St., near the Holy Redeemer Church in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood.

The other teen, Dequan Gordon, 16, was injured in a shooting at a home across the street from Lillie C. Evans Elementary School in northwest Miami-Dade County, police said.

Gordon was shot in the leg at the front porch of the home, 7550 NW 19 Ave. when a gunman approached him and a friend and began to shoot, police said.

Paramedics took Gordon to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was in stable condition Wednesday night.

Gordon's friend wasn't injured, police said.

Police said the gunman who shot Gordon fled in a red Toyota Camry.

Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, condemned the shootings Wednesday night on Twitter.

"We must not allow ourselves to become desensitized when news of juveniles getting shot in our community becomes an almost daily occurrence," he wrote.

Police are investigating to determine if the shootings are connected.
