2 die in Tampa plane crash, authorities say

A Pensacola-bound Cessna 340 crashed while taking off at Peter O. Knight Airport in Tampa Friday afternoon, authorities said. 

Two people died, police said. Drivers in downtown Tampa reported seeing the smoke from the fire at Davis Islands about 11:30 a.m.

The Cessna was "completely engulfed in flames,"  Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Mark Bogush said. 

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.
