1 killed in hit-and-run crash in Opa-locka

Driver flees in gold SUV, authorities say

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – A pedestrian was killed late Wednesday night in Opa-locka, authorities said.

The incident was reported about 10:45 p.m. outside a Burger King on Northwest 136th Street and 27th Avenue.

Surveillance video from two nearby businesses show a driver getting out of a gold SUV after the crash and then getting back inside and driving off.

"It's not good that that happened, but it's good (that) we have the camera to record it," Tim Busch from Porters Locksmiths said.

According to police, the victim, who appeared to be in his 60s, was attempting to cross Superior Street when he was struck by the SUV that was heading north on Northwest 27th Avenue.

"We see it because right, there's no walk sign over here, and this isn't the first time it's happened," Busch said.

Witnesses told detectives that they saw the driver get out of his vehicle and walk up to the victim before driving off.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Opa-locka police later found a gold Infiniti SUV with front-end damage in the 300 block of Sabur Lane.

"Whoever was the person behind the wheel, if they see the video, maybe they'll turn themselves in. Maybe they will realize they might be recognized," Busch said.

Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said the victim did not have identification on him and authorities are still working to identify him and notify the next of kin.

Anyone with information about the driver is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
