Hialeah landlord accused of fatally shooting tenant denied bond

Police say Reineiro Espino Caballero, 76, shot victim in late rent dispute

MIAMI – A Hialeah landlord accused of fatally shooting his tenant in a late rent payment dispute will remain in jail without bond.

Reineiro Espino Caballero, 76, was arrested Sunday on charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery. Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer ruled Monday that Caballero should remain behind bars.

"First-degree murder is no bond," Glazer said. "Count two, armed burglary, no bond."

Hialeah police said Caballero got into an argument with his tenant, Ramon Emilio Gutierrez Castillo, 46, about a rent payment of $550, which was due April 1.

According to a police report, Castillo went inside his home and locked the sliding-glass door to prevent Caballero from entering. Police said Caballero walked back to his home, got a gun and returned, shooting the glass to get inside.

Police said the landlord and the tenant became involved in a physical altercation, during which time Caballero shot Castillo in the face.

Castillo was already dead by the time police arrived.
