Would-be robber leaves empty-handed after clerk escapes

Gunman tries to rob Mobil gas station in Oakland Park

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A would-be robbed left empty-handed after a gas station employee escaped into a back room.

The attempted robbery was captured on surveillance video Thursday at a Mobil gas station in Oakland Park.

Surveillance video released by the Broward Sheriff's Office shows the man approach the counter, put on sunglasses and pull out a gun, pointing it at the clerk and demanding money.

"Put all the money in the bag now," the gunman said.

But the clerk wasn't quick to react, leading the gunman to grow frustrated.

"Open the drawer now," the gunman said.

The clerk seemed to be going along with the gunman's demands, until he tried to close the sliding-glass window and then ran into a back room.

Surveillance video shows the gunman reaching across the counter and trying to open the register, but he quickly runs out of the store after realizing he can't get it open.

BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said the gunman got away in a light-colored Toyota parked near the back of the business.

Anyone who recognizes the gunman is asked to call the BSO at 954-321-4547 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
