Man accused of stealing donations from Dania Beach church 3 times

Carl Deblasio, 57, arrested Thursday on burglary, theft charges

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A man was arrested Thursday night for stealing donations from a church in Dania Beach three times in one week, authorities said.

Carl Deblasio, 57, faces three counts of burglary, two counts of grand theft and one count of petty theft in connection to the thefts at St. Matrona of Moscow Church, at 123 S. Federal Highway.

According to Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Gina Carter, church volunteers saw Deblasio steal $20 from a donation basket on April 13.

A parishioner confronted him, but Deblasio ran away, Carter said.

Authorities said Deblasio broke into the church on Sunday by smashing a glass door.

Carter said he ransacked the church while searching for cash and took $500 from the church's office.

Deblasio entered the church Wednesday through a plywood board that had been temporarily put in place of the glass door and stole several hundred dollars that had been collected for donation, Carter said.

Deblasio is being held in jail without bail.
