Bus driver of University of Virginia baseball team goes unconscious behind wheel, crashes

Driver taken to hospital, players not injured

MIAMI – A  bus carrying the University of Virginia baseball team crashed into several cars and a motor scooter Thursday after the driver went unconscious behind the wheel, Capt. Ignatius Carroll of Miami Fire Rescue said.

The team coach and his staff attempted to gain control of the bus when it crashed on U.S. 1 and Bird Avenue just after 6 p.m., Carroll said.

However, the bus ended up crashing into three parked vehicles, and a scooter, before hitting a tree.

The team's staff performed CPR on the driver until fire fighters arrived, according to Carroll. The driver was then taken to Mercy Hospital in serious condition.

None of the players or staff were injured.

"The team was moved to another bus and reached its hotel early this evening," the university's athletic department said in a statement to 8 News. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the bus driver and his family."

The University of Virginia baseball team will start a three-game series with the University of Miami on Friday.
