11-year-old saves girl from near-drowning in Deerfield Beach

Boy called hero after pulling girl from bottom of pool

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.

An 11-year-old boy is being called a hero for saving a teenager's life.

Angel Rivera was playing with friends Sunday night when he saw a 13-year-old girl at the bottom of a swimming pool at a Deerfield Beach mobile home park.

The boy jumped into the deep end of the pool and pulled her out of the water.

She was unconscious on the pool deck when paramedics arrived, Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.

"There were two adults here, apparently," Jachles said. "One of the adults started compressions to try to resuscitate her."

Investigators said the pool was closed at the time of the near-drowning. Firefighters had to break a lock on the gate to get to the girl.

Local 10 News reporter Ben Kennedy attempted to contact Angel about his heroics, but nobody answered the door at his home.

The girl was taken to Broward Health North in critical condition. Her identity hasn't been released.
