Woman attacked outside Broward courthouse

Bryant Jean-Pierre tells police he's schizophrenic, bipolar

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A woman was attacked Thursday afternoon outside the Broward County courthouse after a man she doesn't know and to whom she had never spoken turned around and began to punch and kick her, deputies said.

Surveillance video shows Byrant Jean-Pierre, 30, walking outside the Broward County Courthouse with his father after visiting with his 27-year-old brother when he suddenly turns around, approaches the woman, and starts to punch and kick her.

A Broward County deputy witnessed the incident from his patrol vehicle and said hr rushed to arrest Jean-Pierre moments after he threw the first punch while nearby employees helped the victim.

The witness said she doesn't know Jean-Pierre and didn't say anything to him to provoke the attack, according to an arrest report.

Jean-Pierre, who told deputies that he is schizophrenic and bipolar, said the woman looked like someone he knows, and that she made a racial slur toward him.

However, witnesses, including the man's father, are backing the witnesses' claims that she never spoke a word to Jean-Pierre. He said his son was upset that his brother was not released from jail.

The victim suffered a concussion in the attack, a sprained right shoulder and a bruised right rib, deputies said.

Jean-Pierre was arrested on charges of aggravated battery.
