Woman killed when SUV slams into palm tree in Miramar

FHP says driver might have fallen asleep, suffered medical emergency

MIRAMAR, Fla. – A woman was killed early Friday morning when her sport utility vehicle crashed into a palm tree off Florida's Turnpike in Miramar.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash was reported about 5:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near the Red Road exit.

A view from Sky 10 showed a mangled Lincoln Navigator and a toppled palm tree.

According to the FHP, the woman, believed to be in her late 30s or early 40s, might have fallen asleep or suffered a medical emergency.

Initial evidence from the crash site suggested that the driver didn't brake.

The woman was later identified as Aurelia Canzoneri, 39, of Pembroke Pines.

Employees at an LA Fitness on Pines Boulevard confirmed that Canzoneri worked at the health club. They said many women came to class Friday morning and left in tears when they were informed about the crash.

"(She) left behind three children, a husband -- just an all-around great person," general manager Paul Georgiadis said. "Very very well liked in the community. Everyone knows her, everyone loves her in the gym. I'm going to miss her dearly myself. It's just a big loss for us."
