Florida father gets attention for ad on Craigslist

Dad sells vehicle he bought son after finding out how he was using it

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville father received a lot of attention online for an ad he posted on Craigslist selling the SUV he bought his son, because he caught him 'smokin' dope' with his friends in it.

Some called him "Dad of the year."

The Craigslist ad garnered many responses from parents standing behind local father Allan Gieger.
"Texas, Tennessee, just all over the place, telling me, 'I'm not interested in your truck. I just want to tell you you've got Texas' support and everyone supporting you with your decisions,'" Gieger said.

Gieger also received plenty of interest in the 1998 Ford Explorer. By Friday morning, his voicemail said "If you're calling about the truck, it's sold." He said someone has placed a deposit on the truck, and if that falls through he has another 60 offers lined up.

Gieger said the reason the SUV was posted for sale was because, "He thinks it's cool to drive around with his friends smokin' dope and acting all thug ... especially not showing me and my wife the respect that we deserve."

"Got the last little bit of roach that I guess him and his buddies were smoking. Whoever gets this thing has definitely got to clean it out," Gieger said.

Gieger decided to take the car away from his 18-year-old son, adding a bonus for anyone who lived in their neighborhood.

"I had it for $1,500, and I'll take $250 off if someone from the Westside did buy it, just so he could see it every now and then when he's walking when he's with his friends," Gieger said.

The ad got attention nationwide. Gieger said he woke up to dozens of messages from strangers, supporting his parenting decision.

"I posted it one night, woke up the next morning and seen a few shares, didn't really think a lot of it," Gieger said. "And the next morning, I woke up, which was this morning, and I had over 60 messages."

Gieger's son didn't want to comment, but he's remorseful and focused now on getting his diploma.

Gieger said this is just a little bump in the road for his son. He told his son if he gets a job and saves $1,000, he'll match the money and they can go and buy a new car.
