Miami Gardens man dies while in custody at Monroe County Detention Center
FDLE investigates after Earl Colston, 61, pronounced dead at hospital
KEY WEST, Fla. – A Miami Gardens man died Sunday while he was an inmate at the Monroe County Detention Center.
Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said Earl Colston, 61, was found unresponsive in his cell in the sick bay area of the jail Sunday morning. Colston was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Herrin said Colston had been in the sick bay for most of the time he was in jail because of medical conditions that he suffered prior to his arrest.
Colston was arrested June 5 by the Florida Highway Patrol on a charge of driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating Colston's death.
