Driver steals CareMax medical van, crashes into several vehicles

MARGATE, Fla. – A driver was taken into custody Thursday morning after stealing a medical van and crashing into several vehicles in Margate, injuring four people, police said.

The crash occurred just after 8 a.m. at Royal Palm Boulevard and U.S. Highway 441.

Police said the suspect, identified as Xavier Johnson, 23, stole a CareMax Medical Centers van in the 600 block of Northwest Eighth Avenue in Pompano Beach.

Broward sheriff's deputies said Johnson drove through the jurisdictions of Coral Springs police and Margate police before being detained by Margate officers.

Police said he crashed into four vehicles in Coral Springs and Margate while fleeing from police and was captured in the 2100 block of State Road 7.

Four people, including a child, were taken to Northwest Medical Center. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Johnson faces multiple charges, including grand theft of a motor vehicle, resisting an officer without violence and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injuries.
