Miami-Dade police dig up backyard while searching for body of missing person

Detectives say leads in 1982 missing person investigation led them to home

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police dug up the backyard of a home in northwest Miami-Dade Tuesday as they searched for the body of a missing person.

Authorities did not immediately say who they were searching for, but said that they had been at the home on Northwest 195th Drive and 55th Court since about 9 a.m. They wrapped up the day just before 4 p.m. and said they would be back at the home on Wednesday.

A Miami-Dade police representative said leads from the 1982 missing person case led detectives to the home.

They are searching for evidence at the property, and said it's unclear whether the person was killed.

A resident in the Lakes of Acadia community told Local 10 News that a married couple has lived at the home with their two children for about 20 years.

"I'm concerned because they're my next door neighbors," Terry O'Brien said. "Like I said, I've known them for 20 something years, so I have no idea what's going on. I've never heard anything."

It's unclear whether the homeowners have any connection to the investigation.
