Chase ends after car crashes into police SUV in Miami Gardens

Car crashes through fence, barrier outside Dolphins' stadium

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A police chase through the streets of northwest Miami-Dade County ended after the suspect crashed into a police vehicle and surrendered.

The car crashed through a gate and barricade outside the Miami Dolphins' stadium in Miami Gardens and continued to speed away. The car then traveled through several residential neighborhoods as a police helicopter followed it from above.

At one point, the car drove off the road and onto a sidewalk.

Eventually, the car continued to speed past other vehicles, driving onto the grass shoulder. The car cut through parking lots and sometimes drove on the opposite side of the road.

The chase ended when the car crashed into the front of a Miami Gardens police SUV at the corner of Miami Gardens Drive and Northwest Fifth Court.

An officer appeared to have fired a shot through the windshield of the SUV.

The suspect got out of the car with his hands in the air and dropped to the ground, where a swarm of police officers handcuffed him and took him into custody.

"He's a good kid," the suspect's mother, Angela Jackson, told Local 10 News. "I don't know what happened. I'm not trying to say he didn't do anything. I don't know what happened."

A representative from Miami-Dade Transit said the suspect threatened a woman at a bus stop in northwest Miami-Dade County. The man is not believed to have gotten on the bus for which the woman was waiting.

Jackson said her son, whom she identified as Antonio Jackson, 24, was on the telephone with her for most of the change.

"He told me where he was located, and so I came," she said.

Angela Jackson said she tried to get her son to stop, but she's just glad the chase ended the way that it did.

"I don't want to bury a child," she said.
