Wandering boy's mother found shot to death; boyfriend arrested

Godparents take custody of boy; Derrick Barrett accused of second-degree murder

MIAMI – The mother of a 3-year-old boy who was found wandering the streets of Miami last month was fatally shot, and her boyfriend has been arrested in connection with her death.

Derrick Barrett, 46, was arrested Saturday. He faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Natasha Bolton.

Miami police said they discovered the 28-year-old woman's body a day after the boy was found wandering near Northeast Second Avenue and Northeast 49th Street. He was found shirtless, wearing just shorts and flip-flops.

The boy had been in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families, but his godparents now have custody of him.

A Miami-Dade County judge ordered that the boy undergo therapy because he witnessed his mother being dragged into their home moments before she was killed. The judge also gave the boy a teddy bear.

Beverly and Kendall Morgan told Local 10 News that they hope to adopt their godson.

"No child should have gone through that," Beverly Morgan said.

Kendall Morgan, who has two daughters, called him the son he's never had.

"Him coming into my life was a blessing," Kendall Morgan said.

The boy is expected back in court Aug. 19.
