SARASOTA, Fla. – A Florida woman was arrested Wednesday after she stole nearly $85,000 from a group of Girl Scouts, authorities said.

Stephanie Person, 41, of Sarasota, faces charges of grand theft and scheme to defraud.

Detectives from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office began investigating in May after the chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida noticed the money missing from the group's account.

According to a news release, investigators determined that Person, who was the member services coordinator for the Girl Scouts, had been using an inactive troop account to transfer money to herself.

Investigators said Person, who was responsible for the management of 500 troops, withdrew nearly $85,000 in troop money.

The news release said Person admitted that she was having financial troubles and, when she realized how easy it was to take the money, she just couldn't stop.

Person was booked into the county jail on a $9,000 bond.
