2 pulled from Intracoastal Waterway off Deerfield Beach

Woman taken to Broward Health North, man pronounced dead at scene

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Two people were pulled from the Intracoastal Waterway Friday morning off Deerfield Beach, authorities said.

Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said a woman was pulled from the water near the 200 block of Northeast 19th Avenue.

The woman was taken to Broward Health North.

Jachles said a man was missing in the water for some time until authorities were able to locate him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sky 10 was over Pioneer Park at 217 NW Fifth Ave. shortly after 10 a.m. as a tarp was placed over the man's body.

Witnesses at the park told Local 10 News reporter Hatzel Vela that a couple at the park, who appeared to be homeless, had decided to go swimming, but began struggling in the water.

"I realized there was a girl sitting across the water on the island," Ronda Tedechi said. "She had swam across and I could hear yelling. It was a man's head. I didn't know it was a man at the time yelling, 'Help!' As I walked a little closer I saw that he was indeed yelling, 'Help!' and then I didn’t see his head again so I called 911."

The woman who was taken to the hospital is expected to be OK.
