The Coast Guard began the search after the man failed to return to a boat during a dive about 9 miles southwest of the Marquesas Keys.

His dive buoy and spear gun turned up, but there weren't any signs of him in the water.

The Coast Guard searched for about 50 hours, spanning an area of more than 3,100 square miles. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and the Ocean Sentry airplane were involved in the search.

Capt. Jeffery Janszen said it was a painful and difficult decision.

"Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to locate the missing diver," Janszen said.
