Sky 10 over scene as man placed into handcuffs

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A suspect was shot and a North Miami police officer was injured during an altercation Friday, authorities said.

The incident was reported Friday afternoon in the area of Northeast 143rd Street and Second Avenue.

Police said the officer was struck by a vehicle.

Sky 10 was above the scene shortly before 5 p.m. and saw two people being placed into ambulances. Police said the suspect and officer were taken to Aventura Hospital.

North Miami police did not say what led up to the shooting, but said officers were forced to open fire at the suspect.

Children who attend school in the area witnessed the altercation and said that the suspect tried to drive away from police and intentionally struck one officer.

"The man pulled up and the suspect tried to run the officer over," one boy said.

"He was trying to flee, so he was like, 'OK let me just go,' and then he hit the officer," another child said.

A second suspect was arrested at the scene.

Police said the officer is going to be fine, and the suspect who was shot suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Further details about the altercation were not immediately released.
