Authorities encourage residents to 'Know Your Zone'

MIAMI – After Gov. Rick Scott asked Floridians living in eastern coastal areas to evacuate before an order is issued, Palm Beach County opened public shelters. 

Meteorologists expect gusts to exceed 90 mph in Palm Beach County. The northeastern areas of the county were at a higher risk, authorities said after declaring a state of emergency.

Palm Beach County was asking residents to visit their site's "Know Your Zone" section and to plan to stay at the shelters. 

Shelters to open at 4 p.m.:

Atlantic High School, 2455 W. Atlantic Ave., in Delray Beach. 

Boynton Beach High School, 4975 Park Ridge Blvd., in Boynton Beach. 

Lakeshore Middle School, 425 W. Canal St. N., in Belle Glade. 

Forest Hill High School, 6901 Parker Ave., in West Palm Beach. 

Pahokee Middle Senior High, 900 Larrimore Rd., in Pahokee. 

Palm Beach Central High School, 8499 Forest Hill Blvd., in Wellington. 

Palm Beach Gardens Community High School, 2445 Holly Dr., Palm Beach Gardens. 

Park Vista Community High School, 7900 Jog Rd., Lake Worth, Fla. 

Pet-friendly shelter: West Boynton Recreation Center, 6000 Northtree Blvd., in Lake Worth.  To be accepted at the shelter, pet owners must have documentation to show the pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccination and licensing. The pets must be crated and pet owners  cannot stay with the animals.
