Key West inmate dies at Stock Island Detention Center

Deputies investigate death of 65-year-old man

KEY WEST, Fla. – The death of an inmate at the Stock Island Detention Center -- where some inmates tend to the Children's Animal Park --  was under investigation, authorities said Friday.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputy Becky Herrin said a detention deputy reported the 65-year-old inmate complained about having trouble breathing.

"He had chronic medical issues and was housed in the sickbay of the facility," Herrin said.

A nurse reported finding the unidentified inmate unresponsive. Paramedics took him to Lower Keys Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, according to police.

Key West Police arrested the inmate on trespassing charges late September.

The detention center where authorities were holding him is known for running an animal center that tends to horses, alpacas, pigs, turtles,  a large aviary, rabbits and other farm animals.
