8-year-old boy wounded in drive-by shooting while playing basketball

2 adults also shot in same incident

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – An 8-year-old boy screamed in pain Wednesday night  after suffering a gunshot wound to the ankle during a drive-by shooting in North Miami.

The child was playing basketball  at about 9:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Northeast 128th Street, when the shooting took place.

An 18-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman who were standing in different areas were also wounded.

Video of the shooting was too graphic to be shown on television, but did show a mad dash by neighbors to comfort the child after he was struck.

Jonathon Laurent, who lives nearby, called 911 after he got a knock on his door.

"I think I did the right thing by opening the door because the kid couldn't even walk," Jonathon Laurent, a neighbor who helped the shooting victim, said.

Laurent stayed with the child while first responders worked their way to the scene.

"We waited for the paramedics and the police told me to get a towel and wrap it around him, which I did, but he was still in so much pain and agony, and just crying so that was really rough to see," he said.

Laurent remains shaken about what he witnessed.

"We're all praying that his son is still OK because no father wants to see that -- that was a horrific sight," Laurent said.
