Worker rescued after cut by saw in trench at Port Everglades

39-year-old worker in serious condition

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A worker was rescued Friday after he was cut with a saw while working in a trench at Port Everglades.

Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the 39-year-old worker was using a K12 saw to cut a pipe in the trench when the saw somehow kicked back and the blade sliced him along his chest.

"For reasons we don't know yet, he either lost control of the saw or it kicked, causing a major lasceration across his chest and abdomen," Jachles said. "He was in the trench when our firefighters got here."

The man suffered a 10-inch-long gash.

Jachles said the victim was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in serious condition. He was conscious and alert while being taken to the hospital.

After a brief halt, work continued at the construction site.
