Man sends woman flowers after killing her daughter, friend says

Family says victim was not dating suspected killer

MIAMI – A South Florida family is distraught after a woman was found dead Thursday in an apartment in Miami's Wynwood Park area.

A man who claimed that he was the victim's boyfriend turned himself in to police before the woman's body was found, but the victim's family said they don't know him.

Cylkia Gerena Maldonado, 28, was found dead in an apartment unit at 3460 NW First Ave.

Her mother was too distraught to speak to Local 10 News on Friday, but Maldonado's friend said she was a hardworking woman who was trying to support her only daughter.

"This is really all around a sad situation," Juana Calo said. "This was a single mom with her daughter with two jobs. And this guy (is) supposedly saying he knew her for two years."

Police said Carlos Enrique Polledo, 59, confessed to killing Maldonado and led detectives to her body. According to an arrest report, Polledo told detectives that he stabbed the woman during a "lover's quarrel."

Police said Maldonado was found with a stab wound to the neck.

Her loved ones told Local 10 News reporter Sanela Sabovic that they don't believe Maldonado was in a relationship with Polledo.

"They don't know this man at all," Calo said. "He said supposedly they knew each other for two years. That's not true."

Calo said Polledo sent Maldonado's mother flowers after killing her daughter, but the flowers were accidentally delivered to her home.

Polledo was arrested on a first-degree murder charge. He is being held without bond.
