Boca Raton businesses evacuated during search for gunman

Deputies called to reports of shots fired at shopping plaza

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A Boca Raton shopping plaza was evacuated Wednesday morning while Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies searched for a gunman.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said deputies were called to reports of shots fired in the 23200 block of State Road 7.

Barbera said deputies learned that the shooter may still be inside a business, so all occupants were ordered out of the business and surrounding areas.

Sky 10 was flying above the scene as members of the sheriff's SWAT team were gathered in the parking lot of the plaza.

Barbera said the gunman entered Academic High School, approached an employee and demanded to know where to find the safe. After he was told there was no safe, the man left and entered CosmoProf Beauty Supply.

The gunman ordered a clerk to open the safe, but the clerk and a patron ran away, leaving the gunman behind.

Deputies searched for the gunman for several hours, but he got away.

State Road 7 was shut down between Southwest 18th Street and County Line Road. Traffic was being diverted east from Marina Boulevard.
