Miami officer dies in single-vehicle crash

Officer Rene Banegas was preparing for a solo police officer position

MIAMI ā€“ A 27-year-old Miami police officer died in crash Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash, city police said.

Officer Rene Banegas was off-duty when he lost control of a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta while southbound at 3400 block of Southwest 87th Avenue and struck a tree and then crashed into a residence, police said.

Banegas, who'd been a Miami police officer for six months, was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash. No one else was injured.

Banegas was assigned to the field training officer program and was preparing for a solo position as a police officer.

He is survived by his mother Damaris, his father Carlos, and his girlfriend Yahosca.

"Officer Banegas' loss affects both our agency and the community he served; the thoughts and prayers of the Miami Police Department are with his loved ones in this tragic hour," the department said in a release. Ā
