Man arrested in New Year's Day hit-and-run that critically injured cyclist

Philip Varsam, 28, accused of fleeing scene Sunday night

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A South Florida man was arrested Monday for a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a cyclist on New Year's Day, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 8:40 p.m. Sunday in the 6700 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

Police said the cyclist, Alkiva Douglas, 19, was riding his bicycle south on Ninth Avenue when the driver of a white 2015 Lexus struck him from behind.

Police said the driver, identified as Philip Varsam, 28, never stopped and continued driving south on Ninth Avenue.

Douglas was taken to Broward Health North, where he remains in critical condition.

Varsam was arrested Monday on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in serious injury.
