Range Rover crashes into palm tree after chase in Dania Beach

Suspect handcuffed, placed in back of police cruiser

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A suspect is in custody after the driver of a stolen Range Rover crashed into a palm tree Thursday in Dania Beach.

The pursuit ended in the 2600 block of Griffin Road.

Sky 10 was above the scene as police handcuffed the barefoot driver and placed him in the back of a police cruiser. He wasn't seriously hurt.

Fort Lauderdale police Detective Tracy Figone said the Range Rover was reported stolen. She said officers spotted the SUV and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver kept going.

Witnesses told Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore that the man was surrounded by officers, but they said he did not initially want to get out of the SUV.

"I heard something hit (and) I came outside running to check to see if someone had hit the car or anything, and the next thing I know I'm being bum rushed by a whole bunch of cops, telling me to stay inside," a woman who works in the area said. "I'm seeing this guy over here being tackled by these two cops with guns, telling him to get out. He doesn't want to get out, and then that's when they started having the K-9s around him."

The woman said the suspect got out of the SUV once the K-9s came out.

It wasn't immediately known from where the Range Rover was stolen or if anyone else was inside at the time.
