Man accused of stealing Range Rover, assaulting police officers

William Serra, 20, arrested after police chase ends in Dania Beach

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man who police said crashed a stolen Range Rover into a palm tree Thursday in Dania Beach after a police chase is expected to appear in court Friday.

William Serra, 20, faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding police, driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of a crash.

A Fort Lauderdale police representative said Serra is accused of assaulting a Fort Lauderdale police officer during Thursday's incident, as well as a Miami police officer earlier this week.

Details about the assaults were not immediately released.

Authorities said they tried to stop Serra Thursday after officers spotted the stolen SUV.

Police said Serra fled from officers and eventually crashed in the 2600 block of Griffin Road.

Sky 10 was above the scene as Serra, who was barefoot, was handcuffed and placed into the back of a police cruiser.

Witnesses told Local 10 News that Serra initially refused to come out of the SUV as police surrounded him at gunpoint, but surrendered once they brought in a K-9 unit.
