University of Miami evacuates Wellness Center

After probe, police announce suspicious device is not a danger to students

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami evacuated the Patty & Allan Herbert Wellness Center on Friday night in Coral Gables.

The Miami-Dade bomb squad investigated a suspicious device left in the building, which houses a gym, a small gymnasium, a jogging track, a swimming pool, a spa, racquetball and squash courts and other amenities.

Someone reported a suspicious device about 8 p.m., according to UM spokesman Peter Howard.

UM police officers closed Dickinson Drive at Walsh Avenue until authorities released the "all clear" notification about 10 p.m.

The Wellness Center will re-open on Saturday morning.
