Man accused of causing fatal crash in northwest Miami-Dade appears in court

Lanard Gilbert, 19, granted $260,000 bond

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man accused of stealing a car and causing a fatal crash late Monday night in northwest Miami-Dade appeared Wednesday in bond court.

Lanard Gilbert, 19, was ordered held in lieu of a $260,000 bond. He will be put on house arrest if he is released from jail.

Gilbert was arrested Tuesday on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, grand theft of a vehicle, armed burglary, grand theft of a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.

He also faces charges of violating terms of his probation and driving with a suspended license.

Miami-Dade police said Gilbert crashed a stolen Acura into another car in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 103rd Street.

The victim's vehicle struck a nearby auto shop and caught fire. The driver died in the vehicle.

A witness told Local 10 News that he tried to help the driver, but the flames were too intense.

"There was no way anybody could have survived that," King Smith said.

Police said Gilbert stole the Acura in Pembroke Pines.
