POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man suspected of trying to rob a check-cashing store in Pompano Beach was thwarted by a deputy who just happened to be there at the time, a Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
Christopher Black, 29, was arrested Wednesday on charges of robbery and resisting a law enforcement officer without violence.

BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said Black entered the store about 6 p.m. and handed an employee a note that read, "I have a gun. Give $5,000. No alarms. No GPS tracking. I will check. Move fast or I'll start shooting people."
Unbeknownst to Black, a BSO detective was in the back office, working on an unrelated case, Oglesby said. An employee told the detective about the robbery, and the deputy called for assistance.
Oglesby said Black left the store emptyhanded and tried to get away from deputies, running into a nearby Walmart, where he was caught.
Black was being held at the main Broward County jail on a $5,000 bond.
