Florida officials warn of red light camera email scam

MIAMI – Officials in Florida are warning residents about an email scam connected to red light cameras.

The Palm Beach Post reports the Martin County tax collector's office says residents have been receiving emails from what claims to be the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The fake emails tell drivers they have been ticketed for a red light camera violation and must pay the citation within 72 hours.

TBReporter.com says residents in Pinellas County have also been targeted in the scam.

“It is unconscionable that scammers pose as government agencies in an attempt to defraud the public,” Pinellas County tax collector Charles Thomas said. “We are working with the State Attorney’s Office, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, and tax collectors across the state to warn residents of this scam and to pursue legal action against its creator(s).”

While South Florida residents have yet to be affected by the current scam, drivers should be careful when receiving email asking for money from any unknown source.

All the emails are frauds and are to be deleted immediately.
