Toddler freezes to death after wandering outside home

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. – A 3-year-old boy who wandered outside his home in the middle of the night died after being exposed to freezing temperatures.

Landyn Melton's body was found on the front porch by someone passing by his house in Burke County, N.C. on March 15.

Melton, who had celebrated his birthday the day before, had apparently left the home and walked outside in temperatures that were in the mid-20's.

WSOC reports wind-chill values were below zero.

Melton's mother and boyfriend were asleep at the time when the boy presumably walked through a door that closed shut after he got out.

The boy's family had just moved into the neighborhood within the month.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death, but there we no signs of trauma on Landyn's body.
