Missing 94-year-old woman found safe in Keys

Kimie Hashiba found about a quarter-mile from home she was staying

KEY WEST, Fla. – A Punta Gorda woman who was reported missing in the Florida Keys was found safe Thursday morning about a quarter-mile from the home she was staying at, authorities said.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said dive team members from the Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission searched the water while other law enforcement officials searched on land for Kimie Hashiba, 94.

Hashiba, who suffers from dementia and speaks only Japanese, was last seen about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Seaside Avenue home, near the 94-mile marker of U.S. Highway 1.

Herrin said a detective spotted Hashiba's wheelchair near 415 Palm Drive at 11 a.m. Thursday, about a quarter-mile from the home she was last seen at.

He followed a trail in the dirt into a wooded area and found Hashiba lying next to a boat trailer.

Herrin said Hashiba was taken to Mariner's Hospital to be treated for dehydration.
