5-year-old drowns in North Lauderdale, BSO says

Officials investigate girl's death

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 5-year-old girl drowned in North Lauderdale on Sunday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident took place just before 5 p.m. on SW 72nd Terrace, at a party where friends, relatives and church members gathered to enjoy the holiday weekend, said Gina Carter, a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office.

At some point during the party, the 5-year-old slipped out into the backyard and into the pool.

The child was discovered by another adult at the party who had gone outside to enter the pool, Carter said.

Rescue officials attempted to resuscitate the child and took her to Northwest Medical Center, but she was pronounced dead a short time later, said Carter, adding that this was a tragic accident.

It’s not clear if any family members were accompanying the child at the party.

It only takes a moment for a child to be out of your sight for something to happen, Carter said.
