MARATHON, Fla. – A North Carolina man threatened to make his dog attack a Florida Keys hotel employee after she rebuffed his sexual advances, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The 19-year-old woman told Deputy Matthew Cory that the man who threatened her was staying at the Marathon hotel. The room was registered to Robert Meadows, 35, of Spring Lake, North Carolina.

She said Meadows walked into the lobby about 4:15 a.m. Wednesday and threw a $20 bill at her, telling her it was "because she was beautiful." She said Meadows later told her to come to his room with him because he gave her $20. She refused.

The woman told Cory that Meadows became angry and told her that he was getting his pit bull from his room to attack her. She said Meadows returned a short time later with his dog, and she was startled when the pit bull jumped on the front desk.

She ran into the office, locked the door and called 911 while Meadows banged on the door, she told Cory.

Meadows returned to his room after the woman told him that she had called police.

When Cory found the woman, she was still in the office, shaking and frightened by the incident. Cory said Meadows appeared to be intoxicated and claimed not to remember what happened.

Meadows was arrested on misdemeanor charges of disturbing the peace and simple assault.

The Florida Keys SPCA was called to take the dog for safekeeping while Meadows was in jail.
