Family raises money for funeral of man killed in Little Havana crash involving police officer
Miami Fraternal Order of Police donates $1,000 to family of Ramon Bueno
MIAMI – A South Florida family is raising money to pay for the funeral of a man who was killed over the weekend in a crash involving a Miami police officer.
The Miami Fraternal Order of Police donated $1,000 to the GoFundMe page Monday for the funeral of Ramon Bueno, 71.
Detectives told Local 10 News that a Miami police officer was responding to an emergency shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday when the police cruiser crashed into a Honda Civic, driven by Bueno.
Police said a black Audi that was stopped at a red light at Southwest Seventh Street and 12th Avenue was also struck.
Bueno was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he died.
The officer was taken to Mercy Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was released.
Police said the driver of the Audi suffered a cut on his arm and was treated at the scene. His passenger also suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
"Here you have an officer that was doing his job and you have an innocent bystander, and he was completely innocent," Miami FOP president Javier Ortiz said. "He was driving. Whether he was committing a traffic infraction or not, it's still a tragedy for everyone, and the officer is extremely devastated with what's happened."
It's unclear whether the police officer was following proper protocols while responding to the emergency, but authorities said the officer was driving with the police lights and siren on.
Bueno's daughter told Local 10 News reporter Liane Morejon that she has questions based on surveillance video in the area that shows the patrol car passing with lights on, but coming to a rest after the crash without flashing lights.
"No lights. Looks like no lights. But, like I said, I'm not an expert," Daimy Bueno said.
The crash remains under investigation.
Daimy Bueno said her family has contacted an attorney as the case remains ongoing.
A viewing for Bueno will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday at Vior Funeral Home, 291 NW 37th Ave., and a burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the same location.
