Man found dead outside Lighthouse Point home

Neighbor believes Karl Wolfer followed home from liquor store, robbed

LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating a death in a Lighthouse Point neighborhood.

Karl Wolfer, 54, was found dead outside his home on Northeast 27th Court, BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said.

Local 10 News investigative reporter Jeff Weiniser said deputies were focusing on a white van in the parking lot of a condominium near the Lighthouse Point Marina.

A woman who asked not to be identified said she heard a woman with a walker crying and asking for help.

"As I'm approaching where the woman was standing, I see that there's a van and I notice that it's a shattered window," she said.

The woman said she didn't hear any gunshots.

Karl Wolfer was found dead outside his Lighthouse Point home.

Another neighbor said Wolfer recently moved into the condo with his handicapped wife.

"He was a nice guy," neighbor Art Fitzgerald said. "I saw him at the pool last night. I was swimming in the pool, he was taking his garbage out and we had, you know, a nice conversation and he laughed. And then 12 hours later he's sitting dead in front of my apartment."

Fitzgerald said he heard two gunshots but was too scared to go outside. He believes Wolfer, who managed J&L Liquors in Lauderhill and often comes home in the middle of the night, was followed home and robbed.

The body was removed from the scene. The van was towed away.

Homicide detectives are investigating and authorities said the Broward medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
